Reader’s Question:

My father had a DUI here in Arizona not so long ago and I was required to get an SR22 auto insurance? Could you explain what an SR22 is and what it covers? Would this affect the financing for his new car?

Gavin

Chandler, AZ

An SR22 is a form that has to be filed by the auto insurance company and this states that auto liability insurance is in force for a certain person, in this case, for your father. This is typically mandated or required if the auto insurance coverage given to a person who got into a traffic mishap or was convicted for a driving violation and was not capable of showing financial responsibility.

Every state has certain distinctions of the SR22 auto insurance and its requirements. The obligation of a driver to have an SR22 must not directly have an effect on the capability to attain financing. Financing for a new car is not related to the need or constraint of the financial responsibility laws of a state.

Normally, there is an additional filing fee of $15 – $25 for SR22 auto insurance in Arizona. A driver who is required to have SR22 auto insurance is already considered high risk by auto insurance companies. And since the policyholder has to buy coverage levels that are mandated by the financial responsibility laws of the state, he/she may notice that his/her auto insurance payment is higher than what it used to. In any situation, if you find that you have to pay higher auto insurance premiums, all you have to do is to shop around and compare auto insurance companies and their rates to get the most affordable policy.

I get discounts from my car insurance, home insurance, and other kinds of insurance. Is there discount life insurance too?

Dave

Phoenix AZ

There are different ways you can get discount life insurance. Following are some suggestion you can try.

1. Check your existing car and home insurances. The banks or companies that offer these insurances will sometimes have offers of free or discount life insurance if you get a car/home or other types of insurance from them. Some of these insurance companies also offer packages which can be a combination of various types of insurance including life insurance. Getting insurance package may come as a money-saving scheme since you will be dealing with one insurance company so payment would be more convenient. Insurance companies also like, as much as possible, to have their customers get all their insurances from them so they would surely offer discounts on your premiums.

2. Credit card companies also offer a free or an optional life insurance together with your credit card. But, usually, their life insurance policy only covered your unpaid debts from their bank. But nevertheless, it’s worth checking.

3. You can also check your local banks. It is possible you can get discount life insurance from them. There are banks which have promos that offer free life insurance for a number of years if you open a bank account from them. Or, if you get a personal loan, car loan, or housing loan from them, you will also get an insurance coverage from them for a minimal fee or even for free.

4. Just like in any subscriptions – magazines, newspapers, cable, and others – you can get discounts when you pay in advance for a year or number of years instead of paying them monthly. Insurance companies have various payment mode: annual, semi-annual, quarterly, and monthly. Insurance companies usually give discounts to policy holders who will pay their one-year worth of premium. This is a sure way of getting discount life insurance.

5. There are also insurance companies or insurance related companies that give out coupons codes or vouchers. They are similar to regular clipping coupons which you can use to get discounts from the original. If you are patient and resourceful, you can search the internet for companies that offer discount coupons. But before you use the coupon codes you will find, make sure that you check all the mechanics and rules just to be sure you do not get into a bad deal.

I currently live in Phoenix Arizona and I am planning to move to Alabama next month. The state of Arizona requires me to obtain an SR22 insurance so I am just wondering if the state of Alabama requires an SR22? I really need to know this information before I move to Alabama. Thanks!

Rico

Phoenix AZ

Alabama just like Arizona require motorist to obtain an SR22 for various reasons. So you mentioned that you were required by the state of Arizona to get an SR22 Arizona. If that is the case, If you have been mandated by your home state to carry an SR22 for certain amount of years, then you will need to continue carrying the SR22 insurance in the state of Alabama where you are planning to move. You will have to change your drivers license to an Alabama license!

SR 22 are state specific though so what is required in one state may not apply in another state. If you are currently maintaining an SR-22 insurance in one state but move to another state, you need to fulfill the SR-22 filing period for your former state. In addition to that, when you move to Alabama your auto insurance policy in Alabama must have liability limits which meet the minimums required by law in your former state which is in Arizona.

To give you an idea, the minimum limits of liability in Alabama are 20/40/10 meaning $20,000 bodily injury liability per person up to $40,000 per accident and $10,000 property damage liability.

I’ve been charged with numerous traffic violations including DUI. Now authorities are demanding that I get SR22 insurance so I can continue driving here in Arizona. What is SR22 insurance and how can I get a cheap one?

Charles

Phoenix, AZ

SR22 insurance is a form or certificate of car insurance for high risk driver Arizona. This is given to erring drivers like you who have been charged with major traffic violations like DUI. You can also be requested to get SR22 insurance if you were involved in a traffic accident without the minimum vehicle insurance coverage. You need to get SR22 insurance so that you can continue driving for the next 3 years.

SR22 insurance is not given by all car insurance providers. Car insurance for high risk driver Arizona is only provided by a couple of specialized car insurance companies. These car insurance firms, however, charge high rates for SR22 insurance, so be prepared to pay expensive premiums every month.

Car insurance for high risk driver Arizona may come in cheap for you if you know how to shop around. Browse the Internet for websites offering cheap SR22 insurance. You can also ask your current insurer if they give SR22 insurance, and if they can provide you with discounts considering you have multiple insurance plans with them.

Reader’s Question:

Hi, I live in Arizona. Now, I got a ticket for speeding in Nebraska. Is that going to affect my driving record and my auto insurance premium here in Arizona?

Isaac

Glendale, AZ

Yes, Gilbert, your driving record in Glendale, AZ will be “updated” even if the driving violation was done in Nebraska. You see, in the 1960s, some states formed the DLC or Driver License Compact. It was not so big before but it gained momentum in the ’90s. The aim of this organization is to monitor its motorists wherever they may be. The organization aims to make sure that a driving infraction you commit in one state will be forwarded to your home state. Arizona, your home state, and Nebraska, where you got the ticket, are signatories of this compact, which means that your speeding ticket will be sent to Arizona.

Now, one tiny traffic violation won’t really affect your premium, I assume this is the reason behind your question. Usually, auto insurance companies do not consider your first speeding ticket to be a factor in raising your auto insurance premium. But if you have several speeding tickets in your home state plus that one in Nebraska, then you might have to expect a little increase in your auto insurance premium. Minor road violations are no longer considered minor if they’ve been committed several times. The auto insurance company will reassess your risk factor when they check you driving history and find it peppered with road violations.

Reader’s Question:

I am from Arizona, and have been accident-free since I had my own car two years ago. Are there ways that I can lower my car insurance premiums?

Jack

Phoenix, AZ

Car insurance companies compute their rates based on the pool of losses they experience. Insurers take into consideration the statewide or countrywide losses their policyholders caused. The losses caused by the few policyholders will be paid for by others within the pool of policyholders even if they have had clean driving records.

Other reasons for the increase in premiums are the costs incurred by the insurer from settlements after a wreck, like medical expenses for the injured persons, or cost of repair or replacement of vehicles involved in a wreck. Although this may seem unfair, car insurance providers make up for this by providing discounts to policyholders who have not been a liability to the company. Most car insurance providers in Arizona give discounts to accident free drivers. A policyholder may also be eligible for a package discount if both home and car insurance are purchased from the same company. Most insurers also give discounts to car owners who have airbags and automatic seatbelts in their cars. Also, being a non-smoker could qualify you for a discount in some auto insurance companies. It is best that you talk to your insurance agent about discounts since most insurers do not advertise their promos.

Needing help in Arizona. I just bought a new car, so I won’t be using my old car anymore. The vehicle insurance on the old car is up for renewal. Should I still renew it?

Cathy

Mesa, AZ

Hi there, Cathy. That’s a great question to ask. Each state in the USA has its own policies on vehicle insurance, even for vehicles not in use. Fortunately, Arizona does not require that unused vehicles be insured. However, you should not just stop your vehicle insurance. There are some steps to take to make sure that the Arizona Department of Motor Vehicle is properly notified about the status of your vehicles. You will have to apply for de-insurance of your old vehicle with the DMV. This way, your vehicle will not be suspended for lack of insurance. I think that if you go to their website you will be able to do this online. However, if your vehicle is already de-insured, you will not be able to drive it in the streets of Arizona until you have it properly insured again. If you are caught driving this vehicle without the proper vehicle insurance, you can be fined from $500 up to $1,000 and have your vehicle registration and license suspended. If this happens, you will have an even tougher time getting insurance for any of your vehicles and your vehicle insurance rates will most likely increase. Aside from this, the state may require you to ask your automobile insurance company to file an SR-22 in your behalf before you can resume driving again.

Reader’s Question:

When I try to register my automobile I was told that I need to get an SR22 because I have a lapse on my car insurance. I thought SR22 is only required if you get caught driving without car insurance or if you got convicted of DUI or DWI. I only have a lapse on my insurance? Is this possible? I live in Chandler, Arizona.

Tom

Chandler, AZ

Yes, it is possible in in Arizona to be required to obtain an sr22 insurance if you had a lapse on your car insurance coverage. Usually, the sr22 insurance is required as a result of a DUI or various traffic violations. Your previous auto insurance provider notify the state of Arizona if your auto insurance policy lapse, canceled or expired. After the state received notification from your insurance company that your car insurance lapsed, they will send your notification through a certified mail that you need to show proof of automobile. Your drivers license and vehicle registration will be suspended if you fail to provide proof of liability insurance to your state.

If you want to reinstate your drivers license and vehicle registration you will be required to provide proof of insurance and obtain an SR22 certificate of financial responsibility in the state of Arizona. You will have to carry and maintain an SR22 for a period of three years from your suspension date.

If you want to know more about insurance laws in the state of Arizona, you may contact the Arizona Department of Insurance. You may be able to ask them what you need to do to reinstate your drivers license if it has been suspended.

Its not about my car, its about the boss CD that I am planning to install into my car which is more or less worth more than the car. Will this be covered by my auto insurance policy here in Catalina Foothills, Arizona?

Leo

Catalina Foothills, AZ

Gotcha Leo,

It depends in so many ways Leo. You need to check your comprehensive auto insurance policy terms and condition first Leo. Your CD player is expensive, so what you need is an assurance that it will be covered. Normally auto insurance requires your CD player to be installed on the dash board, which is the right place for such or according to their specifications. If what you are telling me that your CD player is expensive than the ca, then you might want to install alarm system into your car because CD players like that would really attract a lot of looters.

Auto insurance companies in Catalina Foothills, Arizona often times provide discounts if some added safety feature is installed into your car. In your case, you need to install and activate an alarm system.

In terms of coverage, if you are not covered. You’re auto insurance can carry as much rider as you want on it. You can start include a rider that can cover your CD player specifically or other personal things such as CD’s, tapes, etc. Always review your auto insurance policy; there are so many possibilities for discounts on it. Review it now with your auto insurer in Catalina Foothills, Arizona.

I am a co signer for a car loan for my cousin. He was required to get SR22 which is fine because he already got one but the problem is that I am also required by the state of Arizona to provide an SR22 on that vehicle. I do not use that car and I do not have car insurance on it. I just co signed for that vehicle. If I get an SR22, it will definitely affect my car insurance in Scottsdale, Arizona. What do I do now?

Well according to the AZ Motor Vehicle Division that the car owners under certain circumstances must carry SR22 for a period of three years. Since you are a co signer on the car loan, you are on the title of the car so that means you are mandated to carry an SR22. That may be the reason why you are being required to carry an Arizona SR22.

The best thing to do to find out exactly why you are being required to carry an Arizona SR22 is to contact the Arizona Motor Vehicle Division. When you contact them, you can ask them why you are being required to carry an SR22 and if you have any options. You may also ask them if there is any way you can remove your name off so you wont have to get an SR22.

You may also see if you can get any legal help from an Arizona lawyer who is an expert on this type of

If in case you are still required to carry an Arizona SR22 and your car insurance carrier does not offer this type of insurance, you can type in your zip code here and see if if you can get an insurance company that offer an Arizona SR22 in Scottsdale.
