Reader’s Question:

When I try to register my automobile I was told that I need to get an SR22 because I have a lapse on my car insurance. I thought SR22 is only required if you get caught driving without car insurance or if you got convicted of DUI or DWI. I only have a lapse on my insurance? Is this possible? I live in Chandler, Arizona.

Tom

Chandler, AZ

Yes, it is possible in in Arizona to be required to obtain an sr22 insurance if you had a lapse on your car insurance coverage. Usually, the sr22 insurance is required as a result of a DUI or various traffic violations. Your previous auto insurance provider notify the state of Arizona if your auto insurance policy lapse, canceled or expired. After the state received notification from your insurance company that your car insurance lapsed, they will send your notification through a certified mail that you need to show proof of automobile. Your drivers license and vehicle registration will be suspended if you fail to provide proof of liability insurance to your state.

If you want to reinstate your drivers license and vehicle registration you will be required to provide proof of insurance and obtain an SR22 certificate of financial responsibility in the state of Arizona. You will have to carry and maintain an SR22 for a period of three years from your suspension date.

If you want to know more about insurance laws in the state of Arizona, you may contact the Arizona Department of Insurance. You may be able to ask them what you need to do to reinstate your drivers license if it has been suspended.

Reader’s Question:

My daughter has car insurance now in Tempe AZ and she has a clean driving record. She wont be driving her car for the next year. She is selling her vehicle, and she is worried that she will be put into high risk if she goes without insurance for that long. What will happen to her auto insurance?

Reed

Tempe, AZ

Sometimes when you have had a lapse in your car insurance coverage it may not be easy to acquire decent car insurance rates when you decide to get auto insurance again. If you have prior insurance this can give you a discount on a new auto insurance policy.

So your daughter would likely lose some auto insurance discounts, such as renewal discounts or good driver discount if she has no insurance company for a year or so. Some car insurance providers will not sell you an insurance policy without at least 6 months prior insurance in Tempe.

Your daughter may want to consider getting a non-owners policy during the time in which she does not own a vehicle instead of removing her car insurance completely. This way she will have continuos car insurance on herself. A non owners policy would provide your daughter insurance coverage while driving a friend’s borrowed vehicle. The non owners policy would work as secondary liability coverage if she was in an accident and the damages extended over the vehicle owner’s limits.

Reader question:

I’m supposed to get SR22 in Arizona, but I don’t own a car. Um, yeah, HOW exactly is that supposed to work? I mean, I probably drive my boss’s car for my job about once a week–am I supposed to put THAT down? I can’t imagine what he’ll think if he catches me trying to find the VIN on his door…

Abby

Good question, Abby.

Hold up now–you don’t have to get insurance with SR22 in Arizona with the name of any other car than one that you personally own. This means that your boss’s car is his own business, and you need to deal with yours. Don’t own a car? Well, surprise, surprise, you actually don’t even have to own a car to get SR22 in Arizona. All you need is a driver’s license and a will to find a company for non owner driver insurance that doesn’t charge through the roof.

You can find such a company, and they will sell you a policy for SR22 in Arizona which will allow you to drive your boss’s car and any other car–except for one that has your name on it–and be completely insured and licensed while doing so. Well, not completely completely insured. Instead of getting to pull out all the stops (which is pretty expensive, anyway), you will need to make do with just liability insurance–all the better to make sure that the vehicles you are driving are fully insured.

Cheers,

Fashun Guadarrama.

Q: How do I know if a Scottsdale AZ SR22 company is a good one?

A: One thing you can do is simply ask people about their experiences with it. Ask your friends and families what companies they have their Scottsdale AZ SR22 insurance with, and if they have filed any claims with those companies, and so on.

Another good source for informed opinions on Scottsdale AZ SR22 companies would be in the mechanic shop. Mechanics deal with car insurance companies and claims everyday, unlike your average car insurance policy holder, so they interact with companies on a more direct and constant way than do most other people. Mechanics can tell you which companies they have had trouble dealing with and has made them run through hoops, and also which companies their customers praised and complained about.

You can also look up professional consumer ratings when you are searching for a good Scottsdale AZ SR22 car insurance company. Organizations such as J.D. Power Associates rate many different variables from a lot of car insurance companies.
